Objectives

Different Types of Essay Writing:

1- Opinion Essay. = Persuasive Essay—–one side (one opinion)
2- Discussion Essay. Two points / opinions – Two sides———–
3- Advantages and disadvantages ESSAY. = PROS AND CONS
4- Problem Solution Essay. (Problem——–Solutions)

Identifying the Question

Look at the three questions below and choose one you think is a discussion question.

1-Computers are being used more and more in business and this will help us to be successful in business.
To what extent do you agree or disagree

2-Computers are being used more and more in business.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.

3- Computers are being used more and more in business. Some people say that this is a positive trend, while others argue that it is leading to negative consequences. Discuss both sides of this argument and then give your own opinion.

The first question is an opinion question and we can tell this from the instructions ‘To what extent do you agree or disagree?’.
The second question is obviously an advantages and disadvantages question.
The third question is the discussion question. We can tell this from the typical instructions in the question ‘Discuss both sides of the argument and then give your opinion’.

Before writing
Don’t start writing immediately. Instead:
1-Spend 5 minutes planning.

2- Identify the issues in the essay question. Text type (Opinion/ Discussion / Problem solution)

3- Generate Ideas (Brainstorming) Mind-mapping

4- Choose the best main ideas.

5- Plan supporting points. (evidence) hard evidence (Statistics/studies /RESEARCH/
soft evidence (Examples)

6- Organize paragraphs. (layout)

7- Editing.

3- Online education and training are becoming increasingly popular in the business world. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages.

6- Some people believe advertisements have positive effect on people and business while others do not. Discuss both sides and give your opinion

7- Large businesses have big budgets for marketing and promotions and as a result, people gravitate towards buying their products. What problems does this cause? What could be done to encourage people to buy local products.

8- Many small business are being forced to close because they are unable compete with multinational corporation? what problems does this cause and how can problems be solved?

9- Some people think climate change has a negative impact on business, while others think that it provides more business opportunities. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

10- In some countries, governments are encouraging industries and business to move to regional areas out side the big cities. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

11-Marketing and promotion is key to a successful business. To what extent do you agree?

12- In some countries, small central shops are going out of business because people tend to drive to large out-of-town stores. As a result, people without cars have limited access to out-of-town stores, and it may result in an increase in the use of cars. Do you think the disadvantages of this change outweigh its advantages?

13- Some people decide to start their own business instead of working for a company or organization. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantage

14- In today’s world, businesses and jobs play an important role in people’s lives.
